About the event
Sound scientist, music archivist and song-singer, Andrew Ashong is a Londoner by way of Ghana whose journey began with mixtapes, crate-digging and teenage DJ sets. Drawn to polyrhythms, idiosyncratic basslines and modal chords, his sound reflects a vast palette of influences from Labi Siffre to Jorge Ben.
His breakthrough came in 2012 with the underground hit Flowers, released with Theo Parrish, later winning Gilles Peterson’s ‘Track of the Year’. Further releases, including the Special EP and 2020’s Sankofa Season with Kaidi Tatham, showcased his blend of psychedelia, jazz, funk and soul.
Ashong’s collaborations span Nightmares On Wax, Sampha, Tony Allen and Wu-Lu. On stage, from Bangkok to Brooklyn, he reimagines songs with sonic curiosity and jazz sensibility, sharing bills with the likes of Lauryn Hill and Little Dragon.
