Little Lagos Kollective (LLK):
Music, Memory and the Art of Ben and Oliver Enwonwu

at Westbourne Park
Entrance fee: Free to all

About the event

Little Lagos Kollective (LLK) presents: From traditional Igbo music and highlife to jazz and Afrobeat, music formed part of the cultural landscape that shaped the artistic worlds of Ben and Oliver Enwonwu.

Music, Memory and the Art of Ben and Oliver Enwonwu brings together art, music and storytelling in a unique conversation with artist, curator, author and cultural advocate Oliver Enwonwu. Through selected works by Oliver Enwonwu and his father, Professor Ben Enwonwu MBE—widely regarded as the defining figure of African modernism—the discussion will explore the relationship between music, memory and artistic expression.

Moderator, Nike Awoyinka will skillifully steer the dialogue using landmark works such as Africa Dances, Negritude and Anyanwu, alongside Oliver Enwonwu’s celebrated works Dance of the Gods and Dakar Rhythm II, the conversation will examine how rhythm, movement and cultural memory are translated into visual form. Audiences will discover how art can capture the energy, emotion, and resonance of music while exploring themes of identity, spirituality, and the human experience.

At its heart, the evening is about the music behind the art. Oliver Enwonwu will reflect on the sounds, rhythms and musical traditions that shaped both his father’s artistic vision and his own artistic practice, revealing the creative influences, memories and cultural experiences that found expression in their work.

Accompanied by a live DJ set by DJ Chris Rocka, music will form an integral part of the experience rather than simply a subject of discussion. Carefully curated musical selections will create a dialogue between sound and image, bringing audiences closer to the artistic worlds of Ben and Oliver Enwonwu.

Part conversation, part listening session and part cultural exploration, Rhythm in Form offers a rare opportunity to experience the intersections of art, music and cultural identity through the artistic worlds of Ben and Oliver Enwonwu.
