Chiral Deflections Talk
with Mazzy Mae Green Moderating
About this event
Join us for a discussion between artists Jermaine Francis and Linn Phyllis Seeger, presented alongside their exhibition Chiral Deflections in the Conservatory and moderated by curator and Sherbet Green director Mazzy-Mae Green. The conversation explores the “chiral” relationship between Francis’s fragmented photography and Seeger’s video sculptures, drawing on their respective works CYMKISS_BLACK_0: REGISTER FUGITIVITY and TRUE IDLE to examine how both artists engage with time, materiality, and the elusive nature of the image.
At its core, the discussion considers the tension between Seeger’s algorithmic “road to nowhere”—where digital gestures loop endlessly without resolution—and Francis’s “spatial opaqueness,” which resists fixed readings of the image and the depiction of the Black body as a consumable subject. Together, their practices invite a more complex, unsettled encounter with both digital and physical space.
