About the event

He came from Trinidad in 1965 – to earn, learn and then return. He earned, he learnt, but he never returned. And in staying, he helped shape the Britain we live in today.

Ansel Wong CBE is one of the most significant figures in Caribbean British history. He was instrumental in setting up Black History Month in the UK. He served as Principal Race Relations Adviser to the Greater London Council under Ken Livingstone, working alongside Herman Ouseley and Paul Boateng. He founded Elimu Mas Band and chaired the Notting Hill Carnival Board. He served on the Windrush Commemoration Committee, contributing to the creation of the National Windrush Monument. In 2020, he received the CBE for services to art and culture. Time Out named him one of 50 Great Londoners.

Sixty years on from his arrival, he joins us for an intimate evening in conversation with Yvette Reinfor – reflecting on what he has witnessed, what he has built and what Carnival means to him.

This is a rare opportunity to hear one of our most important voices, up close.
