Home Away From Home
About the event
A Black History Month Celebration of African & Caribbean Culture, Family and Community
Location: Mason & Fifth, Westbourne Park – Conservatory Space
Home Away From Home is a family-focused Black History Month celebration inspired by the nostalgia, traditions and shared experiences of growing up within African and Caribbean households and across the diaspora.
We’d like to transform the Conservatory into a warm and familiar environment that feels like stepping into memories of home. Framed photography and imagery displayed throughout the space will capture recognisable moments, objects and traditions associated with African and Caribbean households, helping to spark memories, conversations and storytelling between generations.
Music & Atmosphere
Music will be an important part of the experience, with a DJ soundtrack inspired by sounds from across African and Caribbean culture, including reggae, soca, calypso, Afrobeats and other music that connects generations.
Games & Community
A dedicated games table will feature family favourites such as dominoes, Ludo and Connect Four, encouraging adults and children to sit, play and connect. We want to recreate the relaxed feeling of being at home with family – talking, laughing, playing games and sharing stories.
Creative & Cultural Activations
Curly Hair Demonstration – An educational and engaging session centred around curly and textured hair, combining practical demonstrations with storytelling and conversations around identity and confidence.
Cultural Tote Bag Printing – A fun, hands-on activity where adults and children can personalise tote bags using culturally inspired imagery, expressions and words, creating something meaningful to take home.
Kreyòl Icebreaker – An accessible introduction to basic Kreyòl words and phrases, encouraging guests to learn something new, interact with one another and take a little piece of Caribbean language and culture home with them.
A Taste of Home
Food and drink will also form part of the nostalgic experience. We’re exploring partnerships to provide familiar snacks, juices and treats that guests may recognise from their childhoods and family homes.
We would also like to offer Caribbean catering in a taster-style format, giving families an opportunity to enjoy and discover different flavours throughout the event.
